Colic
"Colic" refers to dysfunction in the digestive tract that results in fussiness and crying. Symptoms are usually noticeable at 4-6 weeks old. A diagnosis is given when crying is inconsolable, lasting greater than 1-2 hours.
Here are some things that you can do
- Nursing mothers can avoid the most gas producing foods: dairy, citrus, chocolate, garlic and spices, wheat, vegetables in the cabbage family and caffeine (specific food testing can be done by your chiropractor).
- Try changing formulas if using one with dairy (or soy) and/or high fructose corn syrup.
- Parents taking time for relaxation and stress-relief.
- Rhythmic activities such as rocking, car rides, walking with your baby in a front pack and swinging (by hand or in a baby swing).
- Nursing mothers can take extra digestive enzymes and/or probiotics.
- Tummy massage and bicycle motion with your baby's legs (knees towards the abdomen).
- Give your baby a warm bath to soothe and calm.
- Peppermint or chamomile tea can be drank by nursing mothers and/or diluted and given directly to your baby.
- Essential oils (lavender, chamomile) can be used to decrease symptoms, improve digestion and enhance calm behavior.
- Chiropractic and cranial adjustments are very helpful for these symptoms.
